Wrapping up the KA220 project Sustainable NGOs: A Journey for NGOs Towards a Greener Future

The Sustainable NGOs project, part of the KA220 Erasmus+ initiative, has concluded its mission of empowering youth organizations across Europe, with a significant focus on sustainability. This project aimed to promote greener practices, raise awareness of environmental issues and develop green competencies among youth workers, leaders and young people themselves. With partners and participants from Romania, Slovenia and Spain, the project has made significant strides toward enhancing sustainability in the youth sector.

Project Overview & Objectives

The project aimed to raise awareness of climate change and environmental challenges in line with European and global strategic documents in the youth sector, empower the youth sector for the green transition and to start working in a more sustainable way, improve the green competences of young people, youth workers and leaders and help them change their habits and behaviors.

The project sought to develop and promote online training modules, sustainability guides, and tools for measuring environmental impact, aimed at fostering greener habits and behaviors in youth organizations and their members. In doing so, the project aimed to support the European Green Deal and Greencomp frameworks, aligning with EU and UN sustainability goals.

Activities in Romania

In Romania, the project achieved various milestones, starting with the launch of an online questionnaire to gain insights into the perspectives of youth organizations regarding sustainability. This questionnaire sought to explore various facets of sustainability, such as green competencies, youth involvement in environmental causes, government engagement and green best practices. The findings from this research contributed to a better understanding of the barriers and opportunities for promoting sustainability within the youth sector.

Between 25-29 of September 2023, in Bran, Romania, the Bootcamp for Youth Workers and Leaders took place. The bootcamp's main goal was to raise awareness and drive behavioural change among young individuals youth workers and leaders. It achieves this by emphasising the significance of reliable scientific information and promoting positive attitudes.

Romanian youth workers and leaders also engaged in a series of Regional Seminars, where they exchanged ideas on integrating sustainability into their daily practices and projects:

We did not stop here! The Thirsty for Solution Campaign started in June, and it's aim is to bring free drinkable water in public spaces in Romania, starting with the main airpot in Bucharest, Henri Coandă.

Tools developed & Achievements

  1. Following the questionnaires from each countries, the Sustainable NGOs Research Report was launched in August 2023. The study revealed that the respondents generally had some knowledge about sustainability, SDGs, as well as practices of the government, NGOs and education.
  2. A Sustainability Guide for Youth NGOs that includes recommendations for sustainability of organizations.
  3. A Carbon Footprint calculator for NGOs, a tool for measuring the degree of environmental sustainability of organizations
One of the highlights of the project was the creation of the Sustainable NGOs Academy, an online platform featuring training modules designed to enhance participants' green skills. These modules provided knowledge on sustainability policies, carbon and ecological footprints, the European GreenComp framework and best practices in sustainable development. Participants had the opportunity to explore these resources and apply them to their work within their organizations, contributing to the collective effort of building a greener future.
