Under the context of the European Year of Digital Citizenship (DCEY25), GEYC celebrated World Radio Day through multiple interactive events and initiatives in the community.
Pixels of Change
For many years the radio played a key role in the dissemination of information. The radio was the main way people got their information from outside their city or community. Radio now plays a different role in people’s lives, but information is now harder to assess. This is why GEYC started the Pixels of Change workshop series where one of the digital competencies we cover is Information. Through the Pixels of Change workshops, young people in highschools in Romania were able to learn more tools to help them discern between real and fake news.
DigIT Fact of the Week
In order to further inform the young people about how everyday technologies change their world, we started the DigIT Fact of the Week series. In this weekly series we showcased multiple technologies, one of them being the radio. We talked about the history of radio, how radio was created, how the radio works, its impact on society and its evolution over the years.
World Radio Day at the GEYC Office
To mark the UN recognized day, we organized an event in the community at the GEYC office. During the event we were reminded about how important communication is and how impactful a breakdown in communication is. We had a conversation on the use of radio today and using Radio Garden, we explored the cultural differences in radio around the world.
Activism Collectors: Women in STEAM Edition
Last but not least, we launched the podcast series: Activism Collectors - Women in STEAM Edition. We built on the impact radio has had on the world through a podcast focused on the lessons and successes of women in STEAM. In this series we invited 6 guests and explored many industries such as art, NGOs, aviation, dermatology, technology and math.
