GEYC hosts “EFIVOS Dialogues: Young People and Their Contribution to European Democracy”

On August 19, 2024, GEYC organized an impactful online event under the EFIVOS in Europe project, titled “EFIVOS Dialogues: Young People and their Contribution to European Democracy.” This event was designed to explore the ways in which young people can be empowered to actively participate in European democratic life, with a particular focus on the role of journalism and media in this process. Additionally, it provided an opportunity to present the activities and outcomes of the EFIVOS project.

Empowering young people is not just about giving them a platform to express their opinions and defend their interests; it is also about instilling in them a deep sense of civic responsibility and understanding the importance of engagement in democratic processes. This event was a crucial step in that direction, offering a space for young voices to be heard and valued.

Methodology of discussion

The 90-minute event was thoughtfully structured into several segments. It began with a brief introduction to the EFIVOS project, setting the stage for a dynamic and interactive dialogue with the young participants. This dialogue aimed to identify effective methods by which young people can utilize journalism and media as tools for engaging in democratic life.

The event also featured testimonials from young individuals who have been actively involved in the EFIVOS project. These testimonials provided valuable insights into their personal experiences, illustrating the tangible impact of the initiative on their lives and communities.

Topics discussed

The discussion during the event revolved around three main themes:

  • The role of journalism and media in democratic participation: Participants discussed how journalism and media can serve as powerful tools for promoting civic engagement. By using these platforms, young people can educate their communities on the importance of participating in democratic processes, thereby fostering a more informed and active citizenry.
  • Community awareness and education: The dialogue explored how journalism can act as a catalyst for social change. By bringing attention to critical issues such as sustainability, human rights, and social justice, young journalists can drive meaningful conversations and inspire action within their communities.
  • Influencing european policies: The discussion highlighted the significant role that informed and engaged youth can play in shaping European policies. Through the strategic use of media, young people can amplify their voices and influence decisions at the European level.

Ideas shared and reactions

Six young participants from the EFIVOS project—Teodora Akinola, Diana Rosca, Sabina Spatariu, Teodora Furtuna, and Corneliu Marina—shared their experiences during the event. These young people were deeply involved in writing articles and organizing the event as part of the project’s work package. They emphasized the importance of youth journalism platforms in developing civic skills and providing a space for young voices to be heard.

The feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive. They expressed gratitude for the opportunity to freely express themselves and contribute to meaningful change within their communities. The enthusiastic reactions underscored the need to expand these initiatives to reach even more young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Conclusions

The “EFIVOS Dialogues” event underscored the critical importance of including young people with fewer opportunities in democratic processes. It demonstrated that journalism and media are not just tools for communication but powerful instruments for empowering youth. The open dialogue highlighted the ongoing need for initiatives that support youth involvement and promote an inclusive Europe where every young person’s voice is heard and valued.

The general conclusion from the event was clear: Empowering young people is essential not only for their personal development but also for the overall health and vitality of democratic societies.
