On June 5th, GEYC dedicated an entire day to celebrating the importance of a healthy environment. Our commitment to sustainability and environment awareness was highlighted through a different engaging and interactive events, both online and offline. As part of our recognition by the United Nations with ECOSOC Special Consultative Status since June 7, 2023, we actively promote the values and principles outlined by the UN, aligning our efforts with the International Days they commemorate through our activities from the four portfolios.
We started the day with the dissemination event for the project "DisinformACTION," in partnership with the Diaspora Solidarity Group and hosted by the European Parliament Liaison Office in Romania. The event entitled 'Disinformation and its impact on elections and climate', aimed to explore the profound ramifications of disinformation on both electoral processes and environmental concerns. The event gathered representatives from civil society to exchange insights and experiences about the impact of disinformation. Set against Romania's distinctive context, where all four major elections occur in the same year, it provided a valuable platform for dynamic discussions and proactive engagement.
To engage more members of the GEYC Community, we hosted an English Conversation Club at our office, led by our ESC Volunteers. Each week, these volunteers facilitate discussions in English and Spanish on various topics. This session focused on Environment Day. Participants played a game called Causeland, where they had to present their cause to a jury, arguing for funding for issues ranging from animal rights advocacy to collecting participation fees for events. Moreofer, after getting in context with the game, the participants discussed and imagined how NGOs could approach sustainability challenges.
To highlight the day, we also launched our Campaign "Thirst for Solutions". This initiative aims to implement sustainable measures for environmental protection and community support. Currently, Henri Coandă International Airport in Bucharest does not provide free access to drinking water for travelers, as it is not connected to the water supply network of the city of Otopeni.
