Study Visit in Freiburg, the Green City

From the 20th to the 25th of July, one representative of our organization, one youth worker from Campina and 2 young people from Campina joined the Study Visit in Freiburg im Breisgau. The team of the project Green Cities of Youth had the possibility to visit a city known for sustainable urban development. Starting early, in the 1970s, Freiburg has tackled energy and climate change, transport and land use, urban liveability and safety, and democratic issues – all using a highly integrated approach.

"This experience exchange brought to our attention many details and information that we might not have known because we do not inform ourselves properly and it motivated us to have a more sustainable and greener future because these are important for us to live on a cleaner planet and to lead a healthier life. The activities were made in some type of way to improve our creativity and social skills. The theme of our project was to learn how much we can change in our daily lives by reducing water, energy and food in excess. For example, we learnt that solar panels can play a huge role in saving energy; even though they seem expensive, in the long run, you will notice a big difference in the amount of money saved from the electricity bills, mostly during spring and summer, we should as well not forget to turn off the lights when we leave a room, we should ride bicycles more often. Another thing we have learnt is that water can be reused in many ways such as: taking short showers, using a bowl in the sink when washing fruit, vegetables or dishes; you can then use the wastewater to water your plants, if possible, take a shower instead of a bath. About food, we learnt that we should never buy more food than is strictly necessary. These experience exchanges are good for everyone because you never know how much information you might learn and how many friends you can make, so we recommend everyone to try them at least once in their life to go on experience exchange."
