Hack the Hate - Internet Governance Forum

On the 12th of November 2018 our colleague, Cristiana Lucaci, took part at the IGF - Internet Governance Forum event where we shared best practices in combating hate speech online as there is little consensus of what hate speech really is.

The Hack the Hate: Empower Society to Face Hate Speech session was part of the Internet Governance Forum event. The thirteenth Annual Meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) was hosted by the Government of France at the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris from 12 to 14 November 2018.

In this context we have tackled two of the main approaches our organisation stands for: the digital citizenship education approach we are improving through Young Digital Leaders program, initiated by Institute for Strategic Dialogue - ISD and Google and the online activism approach we consider through TURN ONline KA2 Strategic Partnership.

Our colleague, Cristiana Lucaci, represented GEYC at the Internet Governance Forum event and here is her testimonial about the session we have been involved in:

"Hack the Hate" session has been a great opportunity to debate on the differences between free speech and hate speech and how we can actively tackle this problematic in the online field. Having a passive attitude is definitely not an alternative. At GEYC we will continue our proactive movement in combating hate speech by bringing clarity towards youth education in the digital sector. Many thanks to the Institute for Strategic Dialogue and Renaissance Numerique for bringing together inspiring individuals and making this session possible!
