Celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity | Building an urban community garden

To celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity, we partnered with our friends from Romanian Angel Appeal (RAA) to roll up our sleeves and give back to nature in a meaningful way, by making a community garden!

This hands-on event brought together volunteers who worked to prepare the soil for future planting and paint wooden structures for raised garden beds. It was an opportunity to engage with the environment directly and larning practical skills. By building the garden, we put focus on the importance of urban green spaces in supporting biodiversity and promoting sustainability.

In addition to the gardening activities, the day also included moments of reflection and self-care through mental health exercises, including a guided meditation session. These practices provided a space to connect, not only with nature, but also with ourselves.

This event was part of the UN-recognized International Day of Biological Diversity, a global call to action urging communities, governments and organizations to work together to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. It supports the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, a roadmap for safeguarding the planet’s ecosystems for future generations.

By building this garden and coming together as a community, we’ve taken a small, but impactful step toward a greener community.

This event took place under the ESC mission `The Sustainability Club` - The Eco Echo workshops consist of six sessions facilitated by our European Solidarity Corps volunteers. These activities are part of the ESC volunteer mission ‘A Sustainable Life’, funded through ESC51-2022.
