Last month, our organization had the opportunity to take part in the GaminGEE learning activity in Burgos, Spain, from October 9-12, 2024. The event brought together educators, advocates, and organizations committed to promoting gender equality through innovative, game-based tools.
Day 1: Getting started and diving in
The first day began with an upbeat welcome and a fun ice-breaking activity. This helped us get to know fellow participants and set a positive tone for the event. After that, we were introduced to the GaminGEE project and, more importantly, its key component—a video game aimed at promoting inclusivity and tackling tough topics like gender-based violence and LGTBIQ+ discrimination.
It was eye-opening to try out the game firsthand. Seeing how gameplay could be used to teach and promote empathy was impressive, but it also sparked plenty of discussions on how to best integrate it into actual classrooms.
The presentation of the diversity guides was another highlight. These guides are designed for both educators and families, giving practical advice on how to create supportive environments and address challenging behaviors. Listening to other participants share their initial thoughts and experiences using similar tools helped us realize how adaptable these guides could be across various contexts.
The day wrapped up with a focus group where everyone was encouraged to share feedback on the video game. This was one of the most valuable parts of the experience. We exchanged ideas on what worked well and what could be improved, with everyone’s input contributing to how the project might develop further.
Day 2: Going deeper
On the second day, we explored in more detail how the tools could be applied effectively in educational settings. We worked through practical scenarios and discussed potential challenges we might face while using these resources in real classrooms.
Completing feedback questionnaires felt less like a box-ticking exercise and more like a genuine way to shape the future of the project. The event coordinators made it clear that our opinions were essential, and it was nice to know that what we shared would help refine the game and guides.
Overall, participating in the GaminGEE learning activity was a positive experience. We left with a stronger understanding of how game-based learning can be used to tackle serious issues like discrimination and gender-based violence. The event also reinforced that we’re part of a broader community dedicated to creating change, which is reassuring and motivating.
Going forward, we’re excited to implement what we learned and share these resources with our local educators. There’s a lot of potential here to make a real impact, and we’re glad to be a part of it.
